Robotics Robots that can experience emotions may be a long way off, but perhaps robots that are sensitive to our emotions is more tangible, say Vanderbilt researchers Nilanjan Sarkar and Craig Smith in this article. Their project has two parts. First, to accurately detect one's psychological state by analyzing the output of a variety of physiological sensors. Second, to process that information real-time and convert it to a form that a computer or robot can process. Past research has shown that different people express the same emotion differently. So the Vanderbilt researchers are taking an individual approach--collecting baseline information for individuals and analyzing it to identify the responses associated with different mental states.
